Abstract:

In this paper we study temporal-modal distinctions in six Oceanic languages of Vanuatu. We carried out storyboard-based elicitations with several speakers per language to investigate the relation between tense and modality and the role of the realis/irrealis distinction. We found that this distinction plays an important role in all languages, but that some prioritise temporal over modal reference in certain contexts.
