Mark R. Cohens "Under Crescent and Cross" in arabischer Übersetzung oder Wie eine Übersetzung den wissenschaftlichen Austausch mit der arabischen Welt konterkariert

Abstract

Die Besprechung geht der Frage nach, ob die arabische Übersetzung von Mark R. Cohens Under Crescent and Cross: the Jews in the Middle Ages dem Anspruch gerecht wird, das englische Original nach anerkannten editorischen und philologischen Kriterien als einen wissenschaftlichen Text ins Arabische zu übertragen. Zwei Aspekte stehen dabei im Vordergrund: zum einen, inwieweit und in welchem Umfang das Translat in die aktuelle Fachliteratur der arabischen Judaistik eingebettet wird, zum anderen die philologische Qualität des verwendeten Arabisch, insbesondere unter dem Gesichtspunkt als einer wissenschaftlichen Fachsprache. Für beide Aspekte wird das Niveau einer seriösen wissenschaftlichen Übersetzung deutlich verfehlt.

فذلكة : إنّ هذه القراءة في كتاب مارك ر. كوهين "بين الهلال والصليب : وضع اليهود في القرون الوسطى" المنقول إلى العربية من الأصل الإنجليزي "Under Crescent and Cross" تطرح السؤال إذا قد نجحت الترجمة العربية في نقل النصّ حسب معايير التحرير العلمي والقواعد النحوية المعترف بها أم لا ؟ تركّز القراءة انتباهها على وجهين : أوّلا هل تمّ وضع النصّ المنقول وتأطيره في سياق أدبيات الدراسات اليهودية الجارية حاليّا في الجامعات ومعاهد البحث العربية ؟ ثانيا هل لبّت لغة الترجمة متطلّبات الفصاحة والاصطلاح العربيين، خاصّة فيما يخصّ اللغة العربية بصفتها لغة علمية ؟ والخلاصة أنّ هذه الترجمة العربية لا تبلغ إلى المستوى العلمي الرصين المطلوب في كلى الوجهين البتّة.

This review essay asks whether the Arabic translation of Mark R. Cohen’s Under Crescent and Cross: the Jews in the Middle Ages meets the demands of a scholarly translation, as far as regards generally recognized editorial and philological criteria. The main focus lies on two aspects. On the one hand, the translated text should be embedded into the Arabic literature of Jewish studies as produced by Arab scholars in recent years. On the other hand, the language of the translation should fulfill the philological requirements of a proper Arabic, in particular as a language of modern humanities and social sciences. For both aspects, the criteria of a serious academic translation are definitely not met.
