Inhaltszusammenfassung:

Inuit, Karen, Maori, San, Sami und Yanomami - sie alle gelten als "indigene Völker ". Auf der Grundlage dieser Selbst- und Fremdbeschreibung treten sie als politische Akteure in Erscheinung und fordern ihre Rechte auf Selbstbestimmung, Land und eigene Institutionen ein. Wie aber institutionalisierte sich diese globale Kategorie? Aus einer Perspektive, die Klassifikationssoziologie, Weltgesellschaftsforschung und historische Soziologie verbindet, rekonstruiert die Studie die verästelte Globalisierungsgeschichte der Kategorie der "indigenen Völker".
