Abstract:
Iodine
taking the essential trace element selenium into consideration
In the case of a severe accident in a nuclear power plant the atmosphere becomes polluted
with radioactive particles including also 131- Iodine. This is a serious problem because the
initiation of thyroid cancer. Many children and young people are affected in particular.
Potassium iodide tablets will be distributed in the population. This should saturate thyroids
with non-radioactive natural iodine 127-I. As essential trace element iodine is indispensable.
It is accumulated in the thyroid gland as integral part of essential hormones. - The
hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis is of high position within the hormonal regulation and
has therefore influence on the whole human metabolism and integrity of heath. Iodine
deficiency like goiter, Hashimoto-thyroiditis and other sever diseases caused research in the
hormones of thyroid gland over more as half a century. This is still going on today because
the biosynthesis and the structure of several hormones and their mechanisms are not well
understood:
During the last years it has become clear that the state of health partially not only depends
from iodine metabolism but also from selenium, an additional further essential trace
element in the generation and regulation of thyroidal hormones. Some oxidized derivatives
of selenium are very important scavengers: They prevent tissues, cell membranes and nuclei
against high aggressively free radicals, in particular surplus destructive hydroxyl radicals.
Strong scavengers therefore are able to suppress or inhibit severe inflammation and perhaps
the development of cancer.
Finally we have to emphasize that without quantum chemical inspection processes many of
our ideas are of hypothetical character and we hope on soon verifiability or falsification.
