Julije Knifer : Painter of Absurd

Abstract

The oeuvre of Julije Knifer was marked by meander paintings, an old Greek ornament, that was first recognised in Compositions in late 190s and continously represented in different mediums: painting, sculpture, relief, collages, wall painintgs, journals from 1959 onwards.Meander is not an ornament in Knifer`s oeuvre but a whole system, as one mender is just a part of the whole meander oeuvre.Meander is a form through which Knifer ultimately marks the facts, borderline situations, a form on which he tries to inscribe his consciousness trying to trespass the material character of art itself.
