Abstract:

This paper studys the rules of operation of the "unstable e" (also called "mute e", "dropped e" or schwa) in contemporary French. The author demonstrates in example of three speeches that the unstable e can perform a pragmatic function in statements conceived in the spoken code. Altogether, the operation of the unstable e depends on prosodic, semantic, pragmatic factors, etc. This fact makes it necessary to study the overall phonic variation in contemporary French.
