Abstract:
The subproject Pfälzerwald, integrated into the interdisciplinary German-Austrian-Hungarian research project »Reiterkrieger, Burgenbauer. Die frühen Ungarn und das ,Deutsche Reich‘ vom 9. bis zum 11. Jahrhundert« of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum Mainz focuses beside questions to the settlement processes in the Early and Late Middle Ages especially on the refuge-fort phenomenon, which is said to result from the Hungarian raids in the 9th and 10th century.
If the refuge-forts are a result of the Palatine research history is to be discussed as well as models of settlement processes that give ideas how colonisation could have taken place. Finally, some new research concerning the ceramics of the region give first answers to chronology, production structures and communication zones in this settlement area.
