Persuasive Semiose der Avantgarde. Umberto Ecos Kognitive Semiotik aus rhetorischer Perspektive

Abstract

Diese Arbeit versucht eine visuelle Kunstrhetorik zu definieren, die auf der kognitiven Semiotik Umberto Ecos und auf den Rhetoriktheorien Joachim Knapes fußt. Semiotik und Rhetorik sind dabei gleichwertige und überlagernde Instrumentarien eines Denkens, das sich zum Ziel setzt, künstlerische Innovation und Kreativität unter den Aspekten der Codeveränderung und der Bedeutungsverschiebung zu erklären. Umberto Eco liefert für diesen Fall eine hinreichende Erklärung dieses semiotischen Phänomens für den produktionstheoretischen Ansatz der Rhetorik. Eco ergänzt seine Theorie der Offenheit von Artefakten (Das offene Kunstwerk, 1962) durch eine Erklärung von Fällen enzyklopädischer Semiosen als zeichenfunktionale Prozesse der Kognition (Kant und das Schnabeltier, 1997). Diese Erweiterung seiner klassischen Semiotiktheorie ist Ausgangspunkt für eine visuelle Rhetoriktheorie der künstlerischen Avantgarde, die das Persuasionsmodell Joachim Knapes mit einbezieht, das sich Fragen der Differenz von Rhetorik und Ästhetik ebenso widmet wie den Überzeugungs-strukturen von Kunstkommunikation. Eine Anwendung dieser theoretischen Symbiose wird am Beispiel eines Werkes der Fluxuskunst skizziert.

This work defines a set of rhetoric strategies of visual art. The perspective is influenced by the cognitive semiotics of Umberto Eco and the rhetoric of Joachim Knape. From this point of view semiotics and rhetoric are equal and overlapping instruments to explain artistic innovation and creativity among the aspects of codes and conventions and the shift of signification and meaning. Umberto Eco provides an adequate explanation for these semiotic phenomena with a pragmatical view of rhetoric. In addition to his theory of the openness of artifacts (The Open Work, 1962) Eco shows how the encyclopaedic semiosis as a sign-functional process of cognition is explainable (Kant and the Platypus: Essays on Language and Cognition, 1997). This extension of his classic semiotics offers a theory of visual rhetoric of the avant-garde which implies the “theory of persuasion” of Joachim Knape. An application of this theoretical symbiosis is shown in an analysis of a work of Fluxus (1968).
