Abstract:
In my thesis, I present a compositional semantic analysis for (1) German result clause constructions with SO DASS 'so (that)² and (2) German correlative comparative constructions with SO...DASS 'so...that², ZU...ALS DASS 'too + sentential complement² and GENUG...DASS 'enough + sentential complement². All these constructions are proposed to have a modalized sentential complement. Its denotation is an (incomplete) conditional that lacks an antecedent. If the sentential complement is not explicitly modalized, I assume it to be implicitily modalized, in analogy to Kratzer's (1981) analysis of conditionals. Since the interpretation of a modal expression is highly context dependent, the interpretation of these constructions is highly context dependent, too. Result clause constructions of the form 'A, so (that) B² are interpreted as 'A and if A then MODAL B². Besides the modal meaning component, I assume that corrrelative constructions have a comparative meaning component. Constructions of the form 'x ist so Adj /Adj genug, dass B² are interpreted as 'The extent e, such that x is e-Adj, is greater than or equal to the minimal extent e* such that: if x is e*-Adj., then MODAL B². Constructions of the form 'x ist zu Adj, dass B² are interpreted as 'The extent e, such that x is e-Adj, is greater than the maximal extent e* such that: if x is e*-Adj., then MODAL B². The items compared are assumed to be (positive or negative) extents in the sense of von Stechow (1984b). The proposal is formalized by means of the concept of Logical Form. The truth conditions are given within the framework of possible world semantics. This analysis is shown not to face the problems of the analyses in the literature and it is tested (a) in attitude contexts and (b) in negative contexts. Furthermore, it is shown to be relevant to derive the well-known duality relations between SO/GENUG and ZU.
