Zur Kritik vorliegender Selbstmordtheorien und ein Vorschlag zu ihrer Verbesserung

Abstract

1. Die beiden in individuelle Hypothesen umgeformten soziologischen Theorien über Selbstmord - die Integrations- und Anomietheorie - sind versuchsweise auf die umfassendere Motivationstheorie von Atkinson reduziert worden. 2. Die soziologischen Bedingungen sind durch diesen Reduktionsvorgang modifiziert worden, d.h., die Aussage über Selbstmord gilt unter verschärften Bedingungen, die nicht immer 'wahr' sein müssen und daher der empirischen Nachprüfung bedürfen. 3. Die Reduktionsgrundlage ist ein allgemeines psychologisches Gesetz. Die häufig aufgestellte Forderung bei der Erklärung von Selbstmord sowohl soziologische als auch psychologische Variablen zu berücksichtigen ist somit zumindest annähernd erfüllt. In der Erklärung finden sich sowohl soziologische als auch psychologische Variablen, die in empirisch faßbaren Beziehungen zueinander stehen.

The two sociological theories concerning suicide i.e. the theories of integration and anomy, are transformed into individual hypotheses and tentatively reduced to Atkinson's more comprehensive motivation theory. 2. The sociological conditions are modified through this reduction process, i.e. the statement concerning suicide is valid for more stringent conditions which do not necessarily have to be "true” and therefore require empirical verification. 3. The basis of reduction is a general psychological law. It is offen requested that in explaining suicide sociological as well as psychological variables should be taken into account; this requirement is thus met at least to some extent. This explanation comprises both sociological and psychological variables the relafion of which is empirically defined.
