Abstract:
The object of criminology are discourses and practices which get their meaning through their relation to the concept of crime. The aim of criminology is the construction of a theory covering this whole 'province of meaning' and explaining all the phenomena within this province. Treating this specific object as such, we may run the risk, though, of reinforcing it as such and thus reinf orcing ways of practical problem-solving we might not agree with. We must, therefore, not just get a clear picture of how we evaluate our theories scientifically, but also ponder - probably more than other scientists - the value problems involved.
