Abstract:

The trauma-informed psychological first aid (PFA) toolkit was developed in collaboration with the White Helmet (WH) during a Training of Trainers workshop in December 2023 facilitated by the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) in partnership with the Global Initiative for Justice, Truth, and Reconciliation (GIJTR). It is designed for use by WH volunteers and staff and can be adjusted for use by other first responders working in conflict context. A trauma-informed approach to PFA not only looks at the knowledge and skill related to PFA, but also expands to include trauma-informed assumptions and principles about how PFA is conducted on the ground, for the purpose of creating a safe space, connectivity, support, and empowerment, while working toward preventing retraumatization and facilitating healing. The trauma-informed approach also acknowledges the impact of providing PFA as well as other support interventions to survivors of trauma on first responders and emphasizes the importance of self-care.
