This paper offers a case study in low-skill, low-tech applications of 3D digital modelling in archaeology. Using archaeological illustrations of Bronze Age food vessels as the primary data source, this paper outlines a method for producing 3D digital models, which requires very little digital experience or technological access. Engaging with modelling, even at this rudimentary level, proves valuable as a heuristic tool and allows for a more nuanced engagement with the foundational methodological, representative and ethical foundations of model production. Moreover, the resultant 3D digital models have applications for pursuing established archaeological research goals, supplementing experimental practices and producing sensory-oriented artefact reconstructions. Exploring these basic applications of 3D digital modelling in archaeology reveals the importance of fostering a digital practice that scales. Highlighting engagements with digital 3D modelling at a diverse range of levels may help bring greater transparency, accessibility and enthusiasm to digital archaeology, prompting new and creative applications of emerging and existing technologies. |
