Facetten der Osteologie: Festschrift zu Ehren von Prof. Dr. Joachim Wahl

Abstract

Knochen stellen ein faszinierendes Medium dar, dass in vielen Formen den Menschen seit jeher begleitet hat, sei es als Rohstoff, als Gegenstand religiöser Verehrung oder als Objekt in Kunst und Kultur. Weniger im Fokus steht jedoch, dass in Knochen viele Informationen über ihre Besitzer und deren Lebensumstände noch weit über den Tod hinaus bewahren werden können. Der Aufgabe diese Hinweise zu erschließen und den Wesen hinter den Knochen wieder eine Gestalt zu geben widmet sich das Fach der Osteologie mit seinen vielfältigen und interdisziplinären Themengebieten.

Als Anthropologe beim Landesamt für Denkmalpflege und als Professor an der Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen hat Prof. Dr. Joachim Wahl sein Leben der Osteologie und seinen vielen Facetten gewidmet. Um seine Arbeit zu würdigen und Ihm zu Ehren wurde dieser Band zusammengestellt.

In insgesamt 13 Beiträgen befassen sich namhafte Fachleute aus den Bereichen Anthropologie, Archäozoologie und Forensik mit dem Thema Knochen und führen den Leser auf eine faszinierende Reise von den Anfängen der Jungsteinzeit Europas bis in die Gegenwart hinein.

Bones represent a fascinating medium that has accompanied mankind in many forms since time immemorial, whether as a raw material, as an object of religious worship, or as an object in art and culture. Less in focus, however, is the fact that in bones much information about their owners and their living conditions can be preserved far beyond death. The subject of osteology, with its diverse and interdisciplinary topics, is dedicated to the task of unlocking these clues and giving shape to the beings behind the bones.

As an anthropologist at the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and as a professor at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, Prof. Dr. Joachim Wahl has dedicated his life to osteology and its many facets. This volume has been compiled to honor his work and to pay tribute to him.

In a total of 13 contributions, renowned experts from the fields of anthropology, archaeozoology and forensics deal with the subject of bones and take the reader on a fascinating journey from the beginnings of the Neolithic period in Europe to the present day.
